Can You Leave Clothes in Dresser Drawers When Moving?

Sometimes lightweight clothing can stay in a sturdy dresser, but do not assume your dresser can be moved full. Ask your moving team before packing day. The answer depends on the furniture’s weight and condition, what is inside, and how it must pass through doors, stairs, and the truck. When there is uncertainty, plan to box the contents unless the team confirms otherwise.

Why the furniture itself matters

A dresser must be handled as a piece of furniture, not treated as a substitute moving box. Loose joints, a damaged back, weak drawer bottoms, or worn runners can affect the plan. Tall or bulky furniture may need to be tilted to pass a doorway, and drawers that seem secure when the dresser is standing can move during handling.

Share photos showing the whole piece and any damage. Mention stairs, tight landings, and narrow doorways at both properties. Let the crew review the condition and carrying route rather than assuming that a dresser moved successfully once will be handled the same way again.

What should come out of the drawers

Remove jewelry, cash, documents, electronics, glass, and other fragile or valuable belongings. Pack loose or hard objects separately so they cannot shift inside the furniture. Heavy contents such as books or tools add weight and should be discussed separately from a few lightweight clothes.

Keep medication, keys, chargers, and the clothing you need immediately with you. Do not leave first-night essentials in furniture that may be loaded early and delivered later. Check every drawer before deciding what stays or goes.

Ask before removing or securing drawers yourself

Some drawers have stops or hardware that need a specific removal method. Do not force them out or assume removing every drawer is the best preparation. Ask the moving team what it wants ready, particularly for delicate furniture or pieces with unusual construction.

If drawers are removed as part of the agreed plan, label their positions and keep hardware together. Avoid applying packing tape directly to finished surfaces. Let the crew discuss appropriate protection and securing methods for the furniture instead of trying to seal a loaded dresser with tape.

How to pack clothes when drawers need to be emptied

Sort out anything you no longer want to move before packing. Fold drawer contents into clean boxes or suitable clothing bags, and label each container by bedroom or person. Keep boxes at a manageable weight and close them securely. A label such as “Main bedroom — dresser — everyday clothes” makes unpacking easier.

Pack shoes and accessories so they do not soil or snag clothing. Keep an overnight bag separate. For hanging garments, ask about wardrobe boxes and how many may be needed; do not assume all clothing can stay on a freestanding rack during transport.

Three questions to send your mover

Can the clothes stay in this specific dresser? Attach a photo and describe the contents. Should I remove the drawers or leave them in place? Mention any loose or damaged parts. What should I have packed before you arrive? Confirm boxes, furniture preparation, and any packing help you requested.

What if I need packing help?

Let Everlasting Moving know before moving day if you want assistance with clothes or other household contents. We can help pack and unpack using boxes supplied by the customer. Tell us how much packing remains so it can be included in the moving plan and quote.

For a Bay Area apartment move, also share elevator restrictions, stairs, and the distance from the truck to your door. Those details help the team review furniture handling and the schedule. The goal is a clear preparation plan for your belongings, not a blanket rule that every dresser must travel the same way.
